Day 1
We departed on our 22 hour trip Monday morning, toddler in tow...fun, I know. We headed Southeast -- the Moab route. We planned on stopping at the Dinosaur Museum in Blanding, Utah (yes, the name fits the town in case you're wondering...) to give Oliver a much needed break. But it was CLOSED! I guess it is only open during the summer. Next stop on our list was the Four Corners, but again...CLOSED! For construction. *sigh* We didn't get off to a great start.Next we traveled through an extremely boring and depressing chunk of Southeastern Utah and Northern New Mexico. I DO NOT recommend it! It was a big, windy, decomposing dust bowl! I actually think it was a Navajo reservation. All the houses were in various states of decay. And there was literally nothing for miles around. Pretty sad.
We slept in Albuquerque Monday night. Albuquerqe was definitely a relief after the crappy places we had just driven through. A nice, regular looking city! We were exhausted, but the people in the room next to ours thought it was Saturday night or something and decided to have a party. We had to call the office and complain twice because they were blasting their music and being extremely loud. It was terrible! We were definitely not well rested for our Tuesday morning drive. Which brings us to...
Day 2
Our first stop Tuesday morning was the little town of Roswell, New Mexico. In the 1940s there was a supposed UFO crash there. Whether it was aliens or some kind of secret government project seems to be the question. There is a UFO museum in the town that we visited. We had a lot of fun.
From there it was a long, boring ride through Southern New Mexico and into Northern Texas. Pretty much a whole lotta nuthin. But we did eat some delicious tamales from some Spanglish speaking Texans in the town of Pecos.
We rolled into San Antonio pretty late so we didn't really get to take in the scenery. Slept much better, though! Oliver was a little more restless in the car that day, too. We were definitely excited for the day to be over!
Day 3
We started our day today with some sight-seeing. We were only 3 hours from our final destination (Corpus Christi), so we weren't really in a hurry. We visited the Alamo first. It was really pretty. It kind of reminded me of Temple Square. This beautiful, peaceful oasis in the middle of the bustling city.
Next we walked the Riverwalk. That was really cool! There is a river that runs down the middle of the city and there are resaurants and shops all along it. And it sits below the line of the city. You have to go down stairs to get to it, which gives it a really intimate feel because it's enclosed by all the tall buildings. Definitely a must-see if anyone visits San Antonio!
After that we drove the 3 hours to Corpus Christi. The scenery in Southern Texas is much prettier than in the North! Everything is really green and wild flowers grow all along the sides of the roads.
Corpus Christi is an interesting city from the little I've seen so far. Parts of it are gorgeous! The bay is amazing. And many of the buildings in the city are phenomenal. But there are also several buildings that are in ruins just intermixed throughout the city. Usually it's nice areas and crappy areas -- but here it's like a few nice building, a crappy one, a few more cool places, a couple poop holes!
But I guess our apartment won't be funished until tomorrow so we are in another hotel for the night. It's right across from the marina, so it's pretty cool! Oliver is in love with the ocean now. He didn't want to leave. I'm sure I'll be taking him back everyday! And I'm in love with the weather. Even though it was pretty cloudy and windy today. It even rained a few times. But it was still "nice and warm" as Oliver would say! My skin has never felt better either. And Oliver's hair is soooo curly from the humidity! It looks so cool!
